The Notebook
That's the title of the book I've just completed. The Notebook. It is a beautiful story with a interesting ending but most importantly, it is a love story unlike any other.
It is about a how couple first fell in love in their teens during a summer break. However, as the girl was from a high status family, their love was frowned upon byt the girl's parents. So like any other teen couple they would find ways and means to meet and thus had a deep and beatiful love affair between the two.
The girl later moved out of town and that led to a 14 year seperation between the two. Thy guy wrote to her for the next two and a half years but recieved no reply as the girl's mother had hid the letters from the girl.
Fourteen years later, the girl chances upon an article on a old house in the place she had met the boy and this article urged her to find him. She was however engaged.
She met the boy and the rest is history. They fell in love again and the engagement was called off and as all love stories the couple lived hapily ever after. However, this was not the end.
They had 5 children and lost 1. And 4 years before their 50th wedding anniversary, the girl was diagnosed with alzheimer's. She thus wrote letters to friends, loved ones and of course her husband and children. She too made her husband sit down with her to write out their love story. Why? In her letter she explains to him that it is for him to read to her when she can no longer remember who she is and who he was. She hoped it would somehow reconnect the two of them despite the disease.
The guy's health detiorated as well with severe arthritis and being diagnosed with cancer 3 times. But despite his health, he would wake up everyday, looking forward to read to his wife. On most days, she can't recognise him and would turn violent claiming there were gnomes after her. This would break his heart but despite that he would keep going back day after day.
He lives for the very few days when she does remember him. this only happened twice in the book. And the first one was short lived.
He came down with a stroke two weeks after the first account when she remembered him but fought through it so as to not leave before his wife. He knew she needed him.
This was what he did for four years, fighting his own illness and living everyday for the small flickering hope that his wife would remember him and the love they shared.
The love that these two individuals shared was profound, deep and incomprehendable to those around them. They shared a special connection which allowed them to read each other through their eyes and body language. Thus as much as their love was very much something only they understood, their love for each other can be felt by those around them.
Everyone was touched by their love for each other especially in their later years when alzheimer's was attacking his wife's brain. This kind of love is hard to find these days. Both of them have loved each other beyond themselves; both of them chose to love each other despite what becomes of each other.
Their love beacame each other's pillar of strength even in illness. The letters she wrote to him kept his hopes alive and urged him to push on despite the many days where she wouldn't recognize him and his illnesses. The story they wrote together, his patience and the essence of their love helped her to have small victories against alzheimer's. Although short lived, it always gave them strength.
This type of love takes alot of courage, patience and understanding to nurture, which equates to alot of time and effort. Which brings me to an email sent to me; it stated that when you die your company can easily replave you but it is your family who would feel the lost of you. But in today's society, we seem to be putting more effort into our work then into family time.
Maybe we should stop and set our priorities right yah?
How true this is for me ... especially when semester starts. I have no time to chat up with friends and my life evolves around school. As much as I make time for my family and Marcus, my studies is always placed first.
But what good would a piece of paper qualification be if you lose those dear to you?
Some food for thought... nite guys!
